BRIDGES, Eliza (Bethel), born 05-02-1814, McMinville, Warren County, Tennessee, died 01-1881. Eliza Bridges, 66, died Jan. 1881. She was born at McMinville, TN Feb 5, 1814. She was daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Bethel. She came with her parents to Illinois and settled at Shawneetown. Jordan's Fort was sometimes their place of refuge, as at that time the red man roamed at will through the forests bordering the Wabash and Ohio rivers. The government was already engaged at the time, waging the war of 1812. No troops were furnished to protect settlers, and pioneers farther north, like the the pioneers of the dark and bloody ground of KY, were left almost to their own resources. Before Jerseyville was incorporated as a town, somewhere about 1825, her paents moved to this section of IL. On the 14th of Jan. 1830 near the present site of Jerseyville, she was united in marriage to Hiram Bridges. A large family was the result of this union. 13?-15? children in all, 7 survive their mother. Their father died in 1867. Mrs Bridges was a member on the Baptist Church for many years and up to the time of her death, having been one of the first members of Lebanon church, in this county. Each one in his or her peculiar way, plays his or her part, and after having lived out the time alloted on earth dies. The ebb and flow of the time continues, and persons live and die.
