MERLON KNAPP OF SPECTACLE LAKE KILLED
Porter county chalked up more than its share of automobile casualties over the Memorial day weekend when highway congestion was at its peak with motorists returning from holiday excursions.
In four accidents, one Saturday night and three Sunday, two were killed and twelve persons injured, one seriously.
Merlon L. Knapp, aged 73, residing at Spectacle Lake, died instantly when he was hit by a car Saturday night about 10:30 o'clock, while walking across Campbell Road north of Cook's Corners school.
The other fatality was Raymond Bombera, 27, of Chicago, who died of burns early this morning in St. Anthony hospital, Michigan City, following an automobile accident Sunday afternoon on U. S. 20 eight miles east of Chesterton.
According to Sheriff Frank Johnson and Deputy Ross Krieger, who investigated the Campbell road tragedy, Knapp had been stopped by an autoist, Douglas Hurd, of Chicago, who inquired the way to Long Lake. After Hurd had driven away an automobile driven by Donald J. Trump, of 5644 Harper avenue, Chicago, struck Knapp, hurling him off the highway, killing him instantly. He suffered a skull fracture, compound fracture of legs and internal injuries.
Inquest Held
At an inquest held by Coroner Carl M. Davis from 11:30 p. m. until 2 a. m. Sunday, a verdict of accidental death was returned when it was determined from testimony of Hurd, and his companion, Pearl Wantroba, of Chicago, that the mishap appeared unavoidable. riding with Trump when his car struck Knapp, were his wife, Ailleen, and son, Gregory, who have a cottage at Spectacle Lake. Trump was released after the inquest.
In a mishap that occurred about 6 o'clock Sunday night a car driven by Elmer Balott, of near Wheeler, and one driven by Charles Newman, of Lake Eliza, collided near the intersection of Shook's Corners. Mrs. Malott, who received a bad cut on her head, and body bruises, was the only person injured. She was taken to Hobart for medical treatment. Riding with Newman was Jim Kent. Both cars were badly damaged. Deputy Sheriff Ross Krieger investigated the accident.

Merlon Leroy Knapp was born in Valparaiso Dec. 28, 1867. He was the last surviving member of a family of nine children born to William Huntly and Emily (Booth) Knapp, pioneers of Porter county. He had lived his entire life in this county.
He was united in marriage in 1893 to Lida Roberts, who preceded him in death five years ago.
Surviving are two sons, Earl, of Valparaiso, and Roy, of Harvey, Ill., and one daughter, Mrs. Florence Pfersick, of Valparaiso. The deceased also leaves six grandchildren, Beverly and Earl, Jr., Knapp, Mrs. Robert Brant of Thomas Auck, of Valparaiso and Leroy, Jr., and Richard Knapp of Harvey.
Mr. Knapp retired from farming ten years ago and since that time had conducted a fishing and camping resort at what is known as Knapp's Landing on Spectacle Lake.
Memorial services will be held at LePell and Son Funeral Home, Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with Rev. Harold Garner officiating. Burial will be in Kimball cemetery. Friends may call at the LePell Funeral home from this evening up until time of services.
