Katherine Grace Herndon was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to Lewis E. Herndon and Nellie G. Johnson. She was the first of 4 sisters, but had an older brother, Carroll Eugene Herndon who was KIA in WWII. Katherine's first marriage was to G.E. May and they had a daughter, Carol.
Katherine's second marriage was to Paul Joseph Long. Joe adopted Katherine's daughter, Carol, and together they had 3 more children. They lived for awhile in Colorado and Kansas, and finally settled in Tennessee where Joe and Katherine lived out the remainder of their lives together.
