Daughter of Rev. Daniel Hopkins, pastor of the Old South Church of Salem, Essex County, MA. She married her father's successor, Rev. Dr. Brown Emerson, pastor of Old South Church.

Mary's father, Rev. Daniel Hopkins b1734 CT, was a brother of the distinguished Rev. Dr. Samuel Hopkins 1721-1803, pastor of the First Congregational Church of Newport, RI and an early opponent of the institution of slavery. The Hopkins are lineal descendants of John Hopkins of Cambridge, MA (1634) and Hartford, CT (1636).

Harriet Augusta Emerson b1819, daughter of Brown & Mary Emerson, married on June 5, 1849 John Jordon Latting, son of Charles Latting 1774-1842 & Elizabeth Frost 1771-1859. He was born March 31, 1819 at Lattingtown, Queens Co. (now Nassau Co.), Long Island, NY. He died Dec. 16, 1890 in NYC.

John Jordon Latting wrote a small book entitled "Genealogical Fragments: The Sinclair and Feake Families". It includes a history of the Quakers of MA & RI who settled in Long Island, NY seeking refuge from persecution of their religious faith in the more tolerant Dutch settlements of New Amsterdam.
