Bennett died Sept. 7 while recovering from knee surgery at Mohun Health Care Center.Bennett was a Catholic priest of the Diocese of Columbus and 46-year teacher at St. Charles. During his tenure at the school he taught economics, current affairs, literature, composition, Latin and history.St. Charles Principal Dominic Cavello said it would have been hard to graduate from the school without having learned from Bennett."He was a big part of the lives of almost every boy that went through this school," Cavello said. "He was someone who was always an advocate for the student. He was well-loved and well-appreciated."Cavello said Bennett's love for his students made him unique."What really set him apart was he always truly had each student's best interest at heart," Cavello said. "Even when students needed discipline, he was there to make sure it was in their best interest."The boys really felt the bond that he was on their side," Cavello added.Bennett began his career as an instructor at St. Charles Preparatory School in 1963. Over the years, Bennett emphasized several factors that were important to being a member of the St. Charles family."(To Bennett) school was important, learning was important and personal discipline was important," Cavello said. "Also, a dedication to your faith was important."He was very devoted to priesthood and to being a teacher," Cavello said. "This was his home and we were his family.""(Bennett) was a big part of the lives of almost every boy that went through this school."By NICHOLAS A.
