Clara Sybelle Restemayer was born on May 11, 1896, the eighth child and the youngest daughter of Ernest and Martha Geiger Restemayer. She grew up on the family farm 1 mile east of Cavalier. She attended school in Cavalier and was a member of the Zion Evangelical Church, 2 miles east of town. Clara married John Hartz on January 21, 1920 and farmed their entire life on a farm located one mile east of Cavalier. They were the parents of six children: Margaret, Evelyn, Martha, Emery, Fern and Lloyd.
