Mayor of West Berlin. He was mayor of West Berlin from 1948 until his death in 1953. During the Cold War and following the Soviet-imposed Berlin Blockade of 1948 to 1949, he became the spokesman and symbolic figure of the "Free Berlin." As mayor he formed a grand coalition government with the next two largest parties to demonstrate West Berlin's unity.
