Levi was the son of Philip Joseph Hammerstein and Catharine Melchior.

He married Anna Butler about 1852. They had at least eleven children: Catherine Ann in 1854, Sarah about 1858, Tunis about 1859, Samuel about 1863, Ellen about 1865, Alice about 1867, Jesse about 1868, Walter about 1870, Calvin about 1871, Levi, Jr. in 1874 and Hugh about 1875.

Levi was a brick maker and a farm laborer. He lived in Durham Twp. as an adult.

It has not been proved that Levi was buried at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Cemetery, but it is highly probable because records show that his wife was buried there only seven months after his death.
