Johann was born in Diedenshausen, Germany, the third child of Johannes Homrighausen. He and his wife Johanna were married in Berleburg, Germany. Johann followed his older brothers Johannes and Georg Wilhelm in settling in the area around Stone Creek in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. He and his family arrived in 1819 aboard the Brig Osgood. The couple had six children according to his will: Anna Elisabeth Strickmaker, Johanna Marie Neuberg, Caroline Elisabeth Neuberg, Catherine Elisabeth Haines, John Jacob Humrighouse and Sarah Hackenbruck.
