Katie Watkins was born on August 18, 1870, in Lynchburg, Virginia, to James A. Watkins and Susan Cheatham Watkins. A native of Farmville, Virginia, early in life she moved to Sandersville, Georgia, where she later married Hodges C. Roughton and had two sons, Hardy C. Roughton and S. Warren Roughton. After the death of Mr. Roughton, she married Emanuel H. Hermann and had two daughters, Rachel Hertz Hermann (Caughran) and Katie Arie Hermann. In 1930 Mr. and Mrs. Hermann moved with their daughter Rachel and son-in-law, Warren Ashby Caughran, to Athens, Alabama where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Mrs. Hermann passed away on July 9, 1954, a few weeks before her 84th birthday. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Athens.

A funeral was held at First Baptist Church on July 11, 1954, with Dr. E.L. Smothers, pastor of First Baptist Church, and Dr. James D. Hunter, pastor of First Methodist Church, officiating. Gloria Speak provided soft organ music for the service.

Mrs. Hermann was preceded in death by both of her husbands, her two sons, one daughter, Katie Arie Hermann, and her sister, Arie Anna Watkins Mayo. She was survived by her daughter, Rachel Hermann Caughran, two grandchildren, Rachel Roughton Horton and William Hermann Caughran, and three great grandchildren, Billie Kay, Joseph, and Serena Horton. She was also survived by her nephews, Paul Mayo and C. Edward Mayo, and brothers-in-law, Isadore Hermann, Cecil Hermann, and Herbert Hermann.
