Sylvanus J. Altheimer was born on the campus of Alcorn College in Mississippi.

He was the son of the late Rev. Silas Jenkins and Mrs. Jeannette Porche' Altheimer.

Sylvanus' siblings were Joe, Berton and Rowan. Rosenwald, the youngest brother, was born three years later in Pine Bluff, Ark. Rev. Altheimer was on the faculty (Department of English) at Alcorn College. Mrs. Altheimer was completing her B.A. degree in English along with being a housewife. The Altheimer family moved to Pine Bluff in 1933.

Sylvanus attended the training school on the campus of Arkansas AM&N College (now UAPB) before enrolling in Merrill School. While at Merrill, Sylvanus participated in the choir and the Boys Glee Club. On a special musical program Sylvanus sang "Deep River" and on the same night, there was a downpouring or heavy fall of rain. It rained "cats and dogs!" Whenever the weather was bad or stormy, Sylvanus would always pray asking God to spare us from tornadoes or storms.

Sylvanus wanted to be a preacher at an early age. After finishing high school in 1949, Mrs. Altheimer tried unsuccessfully to enroll Sylvanus at Arkansas Baptist College, Shorter College and Philander Smith. This was indeed unfortunate because Mrs. Altheimer realized that Sylvanus wanted religious as well as academic instruction. Despite three setbacks, Sylvanus matriculated at Arkansas AM&N College in the fall of 1949. During his freshman year, Sylvanus sang in the College Choir under Mr. Ariel Lovelace. Sylvanus majored in secondary education and did his student teaching in social studies under Miss Willie Thomas. He finished his college work the summer of 1953 and was assigned to the class of 1954.

Sylvanus was preceded in death by his parents and two of his siblings — Rowan and Berton.

He leaves to cherish his memory two brothers, Joe Porche' Altheimer of Pine Bluff, Ark., and Dr. Rosenwald D. Altheimer of Pine Bluff, Ark. (formerly of Detroit, Mich.). Sylvanus has one surviving aunt, Mrs. Ruth Esther Cooper, who lives in Houston, Texas. He also has many nephews, nieces and cousins to mourn his passing.

God rest his soul — he fought a good fight! Free at last, thank God Almighty, he's free at last!

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the P.K. Miller Mortuary with Rev. W.R. Norful officiating. Visitation is from 10 until 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary Saturday. Interment will be in Bellwood Cemetery.
