History of Floyd County 1917
The Blunt family have been represented in this part of the state of Iowa since 1852, in which year John C. Blunt settled in what is now Charles City, being one of the first store keeper and farmers in that neighborhood, the time of his arrival being two years before the count was organized.
John C. Blunt, the first of the family to settle in Floyd county was born in the state of Ohio. His wife was Maria Wells. He grew to manhood in Ohio, from which state he came to Indiana, going thence to Illinois and from the latter state he moved to Wisconsin. He was married to Maria Wells while living in Illinois, although most of his children were born in Wisconsin. In 1852 he arrived in Charles City, Floyd County. Here he ran one of the first stores for the sale of general merchandise; in addition to his activities in this line, also farming a tract of land on which the eastern part of Charles City now stands. A few years later he sold out to the town corporation. He then bought a farm of over three hundred acres of land in section 31, adjoining the town site. He built a home on what is know as the old Blunt homestead and lived there for the rest of his life, his death occurring on April 26, 1880. John C. Blunt was a sturdy pioneer, whose memory is still fresh in the minds of many of the citizens of Floyd County belonging to the past generation. He occupied a place in the pioneer life and early affairs of this part of Iowas that proved of immense advantage in the period of the settlement of this region. He served two terms as sheriff of Floyd County, being of the first me in the county to occupy that office. In his political affiliation he supported the Democratic Party; he was sent once to Chicago as a delegate to represent that party at a convention. John C & Mary (Wells) Blunt were the parents of eight children, namely; Sarah Ann (who married David Green); Roxina (The wife of William Flint); Lydia (who became Mrs. Henry Green), Dorcas (who married Charles Spotz); Hezekiah; Elizabeth (who married A. A. Thompson); Martha (who became the wife of Joseph Rich); and Charles M. (who married Ettie Warren).

Uncle John was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, May 3, 1812, and was therefore almost 68 years old. He lived in Ohio until 1830, when he came to Danville, Illinois, March 1, 1832, he married Miss Maria Wells, who lived near Danville. They moved to Monroe, Greene county, Wisconsin in the fall of 1836. In March, 1853 he moved to this place being one of the first four settlers, and his being the first family here. He bought a large farm adjoining the town, part of which he owned till death. His was the first store here and was and was located where the Union House now stands., he was sheriff of this county when it covered a much larger territory than it now does, and when the office was more profitable than now. For over thirty years he affiliated with the Masons, and was considered by them one of their honored members. In politics he was ever a sturdy, consistent democrat. In life he was counted a good man, and as his partner says, he always walked and lived an upright Christian. This couple have been blessed with nine children, six of whom, with the mother, survive him; Hezekiah, Charles, and four daughters."
The funeral took place at the M. E. Church, Tuesday at 1 o'clock p.m., and was conducted by the Masons. Rev F. X. Miller preached the sermon, which was listened to by an immense concourse of people. Mr. Blunt was one of the pioneers of Floyd county, and died full of years and honors, universally respected and beloved.
