Born in Fairfield County, Dr. Roland was a son of the late Andrew Victor Roland and Artie Victoria Hook Roland and lived most of his early life in Lexington before serving in the U.S. Army. Dr. Roland graduated from Carson Newman College then earned his Master's and Ph.D. degrees from the University of South Carolina. He also attended Baptist seminaries in Ft. Worth, Texas and Denver. Dr. Roland served as teacher, guidance counselor, coordinator for special education services and Assistant Superintendent for Barnwell County Schools before founding and directing The Sewell Center in 1974. He remained as Director until his retirement in 1986. After retiring, Dr. Roland continued as consultant to the school system and coordinated community education courses on various topics.

Dr. Roland was a Professor of Psychology at the University of South Carolina and served on several state committees for special education. In addition to his interest in psychology and special education, Dr. Roland served as a dedicated pastor of many Baptist churches in surrounding communities for over 40 years. He was a member of the American Legion of Barnwell.

Surviving are his wife; son and daughter-in-law; granddaughter; brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence Roland and his wife, Pat, of Lexington [both now deceased]; sisters; sister-in-law; and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. Dr. Roland was predeceased by brothers, Colie Roland of Columbia and Willie Roland of Columbia.
