Excerpt from "Biographical Annals of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania...", J. H. Beers & Company, 1903, pg 420:

'John Best [Jr.] was born at Soudersburg, Lancaster county, Aug. 22, 1822, a son of John Best [Sr.], who was of Scotch—Irish ancestry. Mr. Best's grandparents, with their children, once made an ineffectual effort to emigrate to America, the vessel they were on being wrecked on the northern coast of their native country. They then settled down in that part of Ireland. John Best, Sr., married there and about 1808 he and his wife emigrated to this country, settling in Philadelphia. He was one of thirteen sons, all men over six feet in height except the emigrant himself. In 1812 he enlisted in the American army, and fought against the British in our second war against that country. He then settled in Soudersburg, Lancaster Co., Pa., and worked around on farms in the neighborhood. He reared a family of seven children, of whom the last survivor, Thompson Best, of Farmington, Minn., died July 18, 1902, at Farmington. In 1823 the family removed to Lancaster, but the death of the mother, in 1829, broke up the home.'
