William was the first of seven children born to George and LaoDicea (Purvis). He married Anna Leomira Dotson on August 25, 1878, and to this union five children were born: Sarah Ellen, Fred Dan, Iva Myrtle, Arthur William, and Raymond Earl. William and Anna homesteaded on the land that would eventually become Smithfield, Nebraska.
