Dr. Dosi Elaine Cook Stanberry

Dr. Dosi Elaine Cook Stanberry, 94, died Thursday, April 13, 2006, at Liberty Commons Skilled Nursing, Burlington, N.C.

She was born at Whaley, Beech Mountain, N.C., the daughter of Millard Spurgeon and Ida McGuire Cook.

For many years, she and her husband, Earl Spencer Stanberry, who died in 1978, worked at Bemberg Rayon Corporation, in Elizabethton, Tenn. She later worked as a feature writer for the Elizabethton Star before deciding to continue her education.

Dr. Stanberry obtained her bachelor and masters degrees at East Tennessee State University, then later earned her PhD at East Texas State University. She retired from Dickinson State University, Dickinson, N.C., where she won many honors as a professor of English and as an author.

After retiring to Chapel Hill, N.C., Dr. Stanberry published several books and plays. Her final book, "Mountain Echoes," has just been published.

Survivors include her daughter, Anita and her husband, Robert St. Lawrence of Graham, N.C.; grandchildren, Karen Swatzell Pfaender and husband, William C. Pfaender, of Franklin, Tenn.; William Joseph Swatzell Jr. and wife, Elizabeth, of Guam; great-grandchildren, Johnathon Pfaender and wife, Trish, of Spring Hill, Tenn.; Caroline Pfaender Riddle and husband, John Riddle, of Louisville, Tenn.; William Joseph Swatzell III and Sarah Swatzell of Guam.

Services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 p.m., Monday, April 17, 2006, at Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home in Elizabethton, Tenn. with Dr. Joe Sorah, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow the funeral service at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Jim Buchanan, David Carr, Doyle Cook, Winston Church, Brookie Potter and David Thurmond.

Memorials may be made to Beech Mountain Baptist Church Building Fund, Mrs. Wilma Storey, Treasurer, 186 Buckeye Road, Elk Park, N.C. 28622.
