A BIOGRAPHY OF AMOS OVERMIER, by Laurence Overmire (1C4R), genealogist and family historian, May 2013:

Amos Overmier (also spelled Overmire) was born on Nov. 21, 1838, in Somerset, Perry County, Ohio, the son of George and Susannah (Houtz) Overmier.

On Jan. 20, 1862, Amos enlisted as a private in Co. B. of the 15th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He was eventually promoted to the rank of fifth corporal and was wounded in the aftermath of the Battle of Shiloh on May 1, 1862. During the Battle of Atlanta on July 22, 1864, he was captured and imprisoned in Andersonville in Georgia, as well as in Charleston and Florence, South Carolina. He was exchanged on Feb. 26, 1865.

Amos's cousin Sgt. George Overmire was also captured on Jul. 22, 1864 at the Battle of Atlanta and sent to Andersonville.

Amos married Fatima Arnold on Oct. 22, 1869. She was the daughter of Joseph and Lucretia (Manning) Arnold. They had five children: Ella Nora, Mary Pearalee, George Thomas, Grace Cardella, and Mabel Susan.

Amos was a farmer living in Blue Mound, Macon County, Illinois, in 1880. He died there on Sep. 29, 1925, at the age of 86 and was buried in the Hall Cemetery.
