Zada's mother, Retta, left her husband Samuel before Zada was born. Retta died in 1901 when Zada was seven years old. Zada was adopted by her uncle George and aunt Gertrude Richards-Dickerman. Gertrude was a sister of Retta Smith. Zada was a Master Gardener and loved to write poetry. She married Paul DeWitt Holmes, Sr. 15 Feb 1917 at Maple Hill, Emmet, Iowa. They had a daughter, Allene Lois, and two sons Paul DeWitt, Jr., and Gail George Holmes (1923-); the latter whom survives.
