Charles' father died in the Civil Was when Charles was about one year old. He was left an orphan when his mother died in 1867. Friends of the family cared for him until the age of nine when he went to Nebraska to live with his oldest brother William and his wife. As a young man, he traveled with team and wagon over Nebraska, New Mexico, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Iowa. When in Carlisle, Iowa, he would live with his sister, Mary Missouri Mason.
In 1900, Charles homesteaded a claim near Seiling in Oklahoma Territory. On September 15, 1907, he was united in marriage to Minnie Margaret Drake in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Territory. To this union five children were born: George Levi, Anna Belle, Joseph Lauren, Bertha Marie, and Ollie Mae.
As a young man he confessed his faith in Christ near Carlisle and was active in the church choir and community activities. After homesteading in Oklahoma, he added his faith with the "Y" Church of Christ. He will be remembered for his Christian way in doing for those he felt in need. He was an honest, sacrificing, and loving companion and father.
Charles was survived by his five children and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Minnie, his brothers William Allen, Joseph Lindsey, John Higgins, and George Traverse, and his sisters Sarah Ann and Mary Missouri.
