George was the youngest son born to Joshua Cope, Sr. and Isabella McRae.

He married Tobitha Ann Higgins on February 19, 1846, in Ohio. They had seven children: William Allen (1847-1913), Sarah Ann (1848-1866), Joseph Lindsey (1851-1876), John Higgins (1853-1917), Mary Missouri (1856-1938), George Traverse (1859-1883), and Charles Sterling Price (1862-1947).

Charles' descendents believed that George was injured while in service during the Civil War sometime around 1863. He had a head injury, was sent home, but never made it there. William's descendents were told that George was a Confederate prisoner at the Union prison in Alton, Illinois, but died on his way home from there. Location of George's grave remains unknown.
