George E. Glenfield

HAMPTON - George E. Glenfield, 76, of Hampton Meadows, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at his home in the company of his family following a courageous battle with lung cancer.

He was born in Mexico, Maine, on April 22, 1927, the son of Elizabeth (Olsen) Glenfield of Hampton and the late John O. Glenfield.

A veteran of World War II, George served in the Ninth Division of the U.S. Air Force.

He worked for 33 years at Varian Associates in Beverly, Mass. - often traveling to Holland, Germany and Norway on company business - before retiring as director of marketing in 1989.

He served on many organizations, namely as president of the Holy Name Society of Our Lady of Miraculous Medal Church of Hampton, where he helped organize efforts to provide Catholic educational scholarship funds for children, organized altar servers for funerals, was constitutional conservator and served as eucharistic minister.

George loved to fly model airplanes; was an avid fisherman; was a boasting Irishman; and belonged to the Hampton Rod and Gun Club.

George first met his wife, Bunny, in Waltham, Mass., and they spent many months courting in Hampton Beach. They married in October 1948 and retired six years ago to the place where they first fell in love, Hampton Beach.

For those of you who knew George, he was our "Mr. Fantastic." In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by his five daughters, Deborah Fring of Richland, Wash., Susan Glenfield of San Jose, Calif., Joyce Wendling of Beverly, Mass., Barbara Glenfield of LaPlata, Md., and Joan Beltran of Walnut Creek, Calif.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, John M. Glenfield of Bedford, N.H.; and three sons-in-law.

Our father was an extraordinary man, loved by everyone he touched. He will be terribly missed, and his legacy will live for generations. On the day he surrendered to the Lord gracefully and peacefully, his last words were "I love you."
