William married Rebecca Ann Williamson Bowe (or Bowles) in Dade County, Missouri on 3 July 1860. They had at least eight children: William Riley, Louella, Alonzo, Florence, Lewis, Anna Marie, Delbert and Mary Ellen.

He enlisted as a private in Co. M, 8th Missouri Cavalry, on 1 August 1862. His discharge date is unknown. He later received an invalid pension based on his service. In 1870 and 1880 he was farming in Dade County, Missouri. In 1900 he was living in Colorado, and by 1910 had moved to Lawrence County, Missouri.

After Rebecca's death in 1882, he married Susan Evaline Hunt in Lawrence County, Missouri on 28 January 1883. There had at least three children: Rhetta, Ora and Elbert.
