Muir, William Smith, a member of the Mormon Battalion, Company A, was born July 19, 1822, at Bannockburn, Sterling, Scotland, a son of Stephen Muir and Elizabeth Blackwood. He was baptized in Scotland Jan. 17, 1842, by Robert Menzes, and emigrated to America in 1844, locating at Nauvoo. He enlisted in the Mormon Battalion, marched to California serving as a private, corporal and sergeant, went to San Francisco after being discharged, worked at the mines, passed through Great Salt Lake Valley in 1848 on his way to Winter Quarters, where he found his family, whom he had left in Nauvoo. He brought them to the Valley in 1849, and located in Bountiful. He filled a mission to England in 1855-1858, having been ordained a Seventy in Nauvoo in 1844. Bro. Muir died Nov. 27, 1896, at Woods Cross, Davis, Utah.
