Mary was the second of nine children of John Henry Fitzgerald and Emma Mary Moninghoff Fitzgerald. She was raised as the eldest because her older brother died aged six. Her mother died when she was 17, so she had to help raise her younger brothers and sisters.
She married William F. Cowell, and they had three children.
Mary lived for most of her life in Milford, Hunterdon Co., New Jersey. She went to live near her daughter after her husband's death, and she died in a nursing home there.
