Robert C. Schmidt, of Cedar Rapids, died in his home Friday, April 27, 2007, after battling cancer for more than two years.

Born to parents William and Pauline in Illinois in 1923, Robert was one of four children. And, like so many of his generation, the economic hardships of the Depression and the cold realities of World War II forged much of his personality and values. Friends and family remember his sense of humor, his generosity, his strong sense of duty and commitment and his unwavering integrity.

Robert served four years in the Navy aboard a Mine Sweeper ship during World War II. And, while proud of his duty, he never commented directly on his war experiences. Only when asked would he reply, "We had a job to do and we did it."

After the war, Robert fulfilled a lifelong dream by learning to fly. His love of aviation later inspired his son and grandson, both of whom became pilots. "We're just a family that loves to fly," Robert would often boast.

Robert worked for Cardox, a commercial producer of carbon dioxide where he was first a delivery driver, then salesman and finally sales manager. In total Robert worked for Cardox for 41 years.

In retirement, Robert and his wife, Betty, found a new passion - socializing with new friends met at the mall where they walked nearly every morning for more than 20 years.

Surviving Robert is his wife of 61 years, Betty; their son, Steve; and two grandchildren, Ryan and Casey. Also surviving are many stories, fond memories, and generous acts of kindness. Robert C. Schmidt was 83.
