Nellie was the youngest daughter of 11 children of the John Morgan Elliott and Martha Jane Mitchell family. They initially lived in a sod house on their homestead granted by President Lincoln's Homestead Act in Rushville Township in southern Phillips County 1 mile North of Bow Creek and 1 miles West of US 183 south of Glade Kansas on 120 acres.
When Nellie was born they had built a beautiful 2 story house of Rock with a barn and a well. This home was expanded over time and given to Nellie as the youngest daughter of John Morgan Elliott after he retired from farming and moved to town in Phillipsburg, Kansas.
Nellie and Earl Freeman McCue married in 1924 and were farmers working wheat and cattle on this property. They also raised their family of three children: Hardy Lee Mitchell who was adopted first in 1928 age 3 (bio parents were George Troy Mitchell and Mina Farley). George Troy Mitchell was related to our great grandmother Martha Jane Mitchell her brother. According to Nellie and Ruth, they also considered adopting Hardy Lee Mitchell's sister Ruth Mitchell but Nellie became pregnant with June. Nellie and Earl also had two daughters of their own June in 1933 and Merna McCue in 1937.
Ruth Mitchell was adopted by the Garrett family in Sharon, Kansas and married Wallace Hanchett in 1943 she met in Kirwin as a waitress and remained a close friend of the Elliott and McCue families.
