Son of the late John Harold "Harry" Swindell, Sr., and Mary Atkinson, he was a retired farmer and operator of Wing Tip Farm. He was a Mason and past master of Atlantic Lodge #294, AF&FM. He was was former chairman of the Hyde County Democratic Party and served on the state Democratic Executive Committee. He was a past president of the Hyde County Farm Bureau and served on the board of directors of Production Credit Association for eight years. He was a charter member of Swan Quarter Lions Club and was a Lion for 55 years. He attended Duke University. He was survived by his wife, Janie Cutrell Swindell; two daughters, Patricia S. Griffin and Lucinda S. Bordeaux; a brother, Russell A. Swindell; a sister, Mary Louis Swindell McGee; a foster sister, Hazel Asby Lane; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild. His funeral was held at Soule United Methodist Church with The Rev. Chris Humphries and The Rev. Roger Paxton officiating.
