John Blue Jr., was the son of John Blue Sr., and Margaret. His father was a private in the Revolutionary War and served with Captain S. Cott under General Potter. His father fought in the Battle of Brandywine on February 11, 1777, where he was wounded in the head and captured and held prisoner for nine months and then released during a prisoner exchange on June 14, 1778.

John Jr was born near the Waxhaws in Lancaster County, South Carolina, just two days before his father was captured and taken prisoner. After his father served in the Rev War, his parents moved to Fleming County, Kentucky when he was young. He married Elizabeth McNary in Bourbon County, Kentucky on April 30, 1801. They had several children and traveled around ending up in Sangamon County in the fall of 1830.

John and Elizabeth had the following children:

1. John Blue, married 1st Hannah Berry; 2nd Nancy Jane Ashby; 3rd Lucretia Williams
2. James Blue
3. Jane Blue
4. Martha Blue, who married her 1st cousin Robert Blue
5. Samuel Blue, who married Isabel Webb
6. David Huston "Hus" Blue, who married Fannie Web
7. Eliza Ann Blue, who married Adolphus Jones
8. William Marshall Blue, who married Adaline Cline
9. Harrison A. Blue, who married Margaret Alexander
10. Caroline Blue, who married Stephen Cantrall
11. Amos Blue
