George Washington Melton was born in Wright City, Smith County, Texas to Hackett Webb Melton (1829-1916) and Mary Hulsey (1829-1861). His first marriage, 26 Dec 1872, to Martha Ann Wilson produced 13 children. He married Susan Pearl Clifton after their divorce.

G. W. MELTON, one of Ryan's venerable citizens, passed away Sunday, Sept. 3 at his home in Ryan, age 86. Funeral service were held at the Ryan tabernacle Tuesday afternoon by Rev. W. S. DABNEY of the Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. K. F. KELLER of the Ryan Baptist Church and Mrs. CASSIE BROWN.

He was born in Smith County, Texas, April 24, 1853 moving from there to Oklahoma 12 years ago. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. SUSIE MELTON, ten children, one brother, one sister, 42 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren. His ten surviving children are: R. L. MELTON of Tulia, Texas; ED MELTON of Lubbock, Mrs. GEORGE FUGATE of Lubbock, HARVE MELTON of Healdton, JESS, JOE, MOSS and STANLEY MELTON all of California, Mrs. HATTIE JUNKENS / JENKINS of Kansas City, Missouri and Mrs. A. J. PHAGANS of Ryan.

Mr. Melton was a member of the Methodist Church and was buried in Ryan cemetery.
