Maureen Murphy was a passionate leader whose 26 years of public service touched many lives and inspired countless others. After battling the disease bravely for over two years, she passed away from complications of lung cancer.
She broke new ground as the first female Chairman of the Cook County Republican Party, holding the position from 2002 to 2004. This was made possible due to the enormous respect she enjoyed among both elected officials and grassroots activists throughout the Republican Party.
The path she blazed leading to that role was one marked by courage, determination and a genuine desire to serve the people she represented. Maureen Murphy was a fighter for the best interests of taxpayers, a person who cared deeply about the Republican Party, and someone who was not afraid to stand up for what she believed in.
A lifelong resident of Evergreen Park, she was elected to the Evergreen Park High School Board in 1982 and served as Worth Township Clerk from 1985 to 1989. Having made a lasting impression on the families and constituents in her community, they voted her in as State Representative of Illinois' 36th legislative district from 1993 to 1997. Shortly thereafter, she became the first woman, first Republican, and first suburban resident elected to the Cook County Board of Review, serving as the 1st District Commissioner from 1998 to 2006. She was also the sitting Worth Township Republican Committeeman from 1986 until her death and the 1st Congressional District Committeeman on the Illinois Republican State Central Committee.
During her service in the General Assembly, she was the Republican spokeswoman for the House Revenue Committee from 1993 to 1995, then chair from 1995 to 1997. She was a sponsor of Chicago Public Schools reform, Cook County Property Tax Caps, and legislation that enabled Cook County taxpayers to contest their property tax assessments to a state agency, the Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board. All of these reforms became law.
During her service at the Cook County Board of Review, she not only oversaw the property tax appeals, she made the system more accessible by initiating a program to teach taxpayers how to contest their assessment. Over 360 property tax seminars were conducted, training thousands of residential property owners.
Maureen Murphy is survived by: her husband Jack, her four sons Jason, Shaun, Michael, and Matthew; and her four grandchildren, Brennah, Maggie, Jack, and Nathan.
A public memorial service celebrating her life was held on Saturday, August 16, 2008 at Queen of Martyrs Parish, 10233 S. Central Park, Evergreen Park, Illinois (9:30am Visitation with the Murphy Family; 10:30am Memorial Mass).
In lieu of flowers, Maureen's wishes were that contributions be made to the LUNGevity Foundation.
