Joel was born in Whitingham, Windham County, Vermont on November 10, 1787, the son of Jonathan Barton and Hannah Dix. His parents moved to several towns in Vermont and upper New York before settling in Bolton, Washington County, New York, around 1800. Joel married, on November 3, 1813, in Bolton, Thankful Waters, the daughter of Sterling Waters and Elizabeth Reynolds of Bolton. Joel and Thankful never moved from Bolton, both of them lived their entire adult lives there and all of their eleven children Uriah Samuel, Samantha Mariah, Calvin A, Daniel D, Emily Henrietta, Hannah H, Achsah I, Phebe A, Warren J, Lois A, and Mary F were born in Bolton. Joel died on August 6, 1838, Thankful lived twelve more years and died in 1850. Both are buried in the Bolton Rural Cemetery. Much of the knowledge of this family is owed to a personal, unpublished family history written by Joel's brother, Alvin.
