Born between 1785 and 1790 close to Wawawai along the Snake River. His real name was Tiwi'-teq'is but was changed to Joseph when he was baptized by the Presbyterian Missionary Henry Spalding.

Old Chief Joseph signed the treaty of 1855 but refused to sign the treaty of 1863 which would have removed the Walwa'-ma tribe from their land.

The National Park Service's guide on Old Chief Joseph has his year of death listed as 1871 but his marker states 1872. Along the top of his monument it lists the year as 1870. Upon Old Chief Joseph's death, the younger Chief Joseph assumed chieftainship of the tribe.
