Charles was one of ten children born to Thomas Jones III (1830-1898) and Mary Stockham (1841-1885). At the young age of 25, he worked as a bridge carpenter in and around Fulton, Kansas.

In September of 1892, he was fatally injured when a scaffold fell onto him while working on a new bridge at Boicourt, a small town about 32 miles north of Fulton. Charles and his wife had no children before he died in the tragic bridge accident.
