Thomas was the son of Johan and Augusta Knoerzer. He married Magdalena Baltes (daughter of John and Magdalena Baltes) and to this union seven children were born.

City's Oldest Native Dies
Thomas Knoerzer Saw Hammond Grow

Thomas Knoerzer, 91, oldest man born in Hammond, who saw the city grow from a sand and swamp area, died yesterday at his home, 230 Wildwood Rd.
Mr. Knoerzer took a prominent part in Hammond's Golden Jubliee celebration in 1933 and at the time recalled how Hohman Av. was but a trail to Chicago when he was a boy.
Born on a farm Nov. 13, 1854, in what was then called Saxony (now Woodmar district), Mr. Knoerzer was the eldest of four sons of Mr. and mrs. John L. Knoerzer.
As soon as he was old enough, Mr. Knoerzer began to work on his parents' farm in Saxony and tool over when they died. he worked on the farm until he retired 28 years ago.
A pioneer member of St. Joseph Church and the Holy Name Society there, Mr. Knoerzer used to recall how St. Joseph Church was founded in the Knoerzer homestead of Saxony at a conference in which his parents took a prominent part.
Surviving are the widow, Magdalena; three sons, Stanley W., William T. and John J., all of Hammond; three daughters, Mrs. William Prange and Mrs. Don Bush of Hammond and Mrs. Pearl Cole of Lansing; 13 grandchildren; two brothers, Otto Knoerzer, president of the Champion Corp of Hammond and Herman Knoerzer of Chicago. Another daughter, Marie Knoerzer died in 1939.
One son, William, recently returned from Europe, where he served with the late Gen. Patton's Third Army for 18 months. A grandson, William G. Prange, Jr., at present is with the Seabees on Guam.
Funeral services will be held at 9 A. M. tuesday in St. Joseph Church where Msgr.Francis Jansen will offer a solemn high mass. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hammond.
the body will be at the Knoerzer home after 4 P.M. today.
