John A Marr, 79, of New Berlin died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000 at his residence. He was born Jan. 18, 1921, near Gabe, Ky., the son of James Marion and Grace Lee Marr. He married Roberta Long in 1947 in New Berlin.
Mr. Marr, a graduate of New Berlin High School in 1939, graduated from Western Illinois University in 1943. He earned a master of science degree from University of Illinois and a master in arts degree from Sangamon State University. Mr. Marr was inducted into the Community School District Unit 16 Academic Hall of Fame last May. Mr. Marr was a retired schoolteacher and administrator. He was a teacher, coach and principal of Tallula High School from 1946-1954 and a teacher and principal of New Berlin High School.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in New Berlin, Kiwanis Club, Sangamon County Schoolmasters Association and National Association of Secondary School Principals. He was a life member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, VFW post 755 in Springfield and 70th Infantry Division Association (Trailblazers). He also was a member of the American Legion post 743, and World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in France and Germany. He earned two major campaign bronze battle stars for action in Germany.
Survivors: wife, Roberta; two sons, Roland L. (wife, Bernadette) of Springfield and John W. (wife, Michele) Marr of Gridley; a daughter, Ramona Marr of New Berlin; four grandsons; four granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Hallie (husband, Edwin) Cole of Chula Vista, Calif., and Ruby (husband, Leonard) Newton of Princeton, N.J.; and many nieces and nephews.
Services: St. John's Lutheran Church in New Berlin, the Rev. Robert Barth officiating. Burial: Lutheran Cemetery in New Berlin.
