Obituary from the Wayne County Press, September, 1911:

H. J. Young

H. J. Young was born in Lamard township, Wayne Co., April 7, 1844. Entered his eternal rest Sept. 1, 1911, after 4 days of intense suffering from burns received in the burning of his home when his wife was burned to death.

He was married to Elizabeth McCracken August 7, 1862. To this union were born 9 children, 5 of whom are living and were present at his death: Mrs. Emily Harmon, Robert, Darwin, Arthur and Weaver. The following having preceded him to the glory world, Ewing C., Margaret, Ethel, and Florence E. The deceased had thirty-one grandchildren. He also leaves one brother and five sisters namely: Robert Young, Mrs. Zack Hughes, Mrs. George Daisy, Mrs. Sam Baldwin, Mrs. Ben Sons, Mrs. Emmer Green.

Bro. Young professed faith in Christ at the age of 20 years under the labors of Rev. Charles Sabine at the Mt. Olivet church. Bro. Young and wife both united with the M. E. church and later they united with the General Baptist church at New Hope a nd were faithful members until death. Bro. Young took an active part in all church work.

At the time of his death he was Supt. of Victory Sunday school, one of the largest rural Sunday schools in the county. Shortly before he died realizing how near he was to his eternal home he said "It is only a step, let me step over." I would say to his many relatives and friends, "Be ye ready, for the Messenger will come for us all and like his call, may be at midnight." "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, from henceforth, yea. Saveth the Spirit that they may rest from their labors nd their works do follow them."
