Duncansville mayor keeps best interest of town at heart
By Jason M. Prucey, Staff Writer

Edgar C. Magill Jr. was born and raised in Duncansville.
In fact, Magill, 62, has spent his whole life in Duncansville -- save three years when he went to a trade school in Philadelphia to learn carpentry
Upon his return, Magil was quick to make his mark on the town, busying himself building or remodeling many of the homes and buildings that comprise Duncansville's brick and mortar.
Magill has been a lifelong fireman at the Duncansville Volunteer Fire Department. He attended the now defunct Duncansville school system before he graduated from Hollidaysburg Area High School.
He raised a family in Duncansville, he loves Duncansville, and he would never dream of leaving this town.
It's only fitting that Magill is the mayor of Duncansville. And as mayor, his mission is simple.
"I just like to do what is best for the most people in town, even if it's not good for me," Magill says. "It's a small town; we're going to keep it that way. There's no room for expansion.''
Of course, Magill is the first to admit little has changed in Duncansville in the 12 years since he took office. There are some new shops and a few more people, but that's about it. And Magill says that's just fine with him.
"It's a nice quiet little town. We don't have any problems with crime. This is a nice little town. You used to be able to say you knew everybody (in Duncansville). Now it's a little tough," he says.
For Magill, there's another side to being mayor along with serving the community: it's all about family tradition. Magill's father, Edgar Magill Sr., was a Duncansville tax collector and later justice of the peace before he became the town's first mayor in 1968.
Unable to hold the offices of both justice of the peace and mayor, Magill's father appointed him justice of the peace. Nearly 20 years and two mayors later, Magill became mayor in 1987. Magill is running unopposed in this year's election.
Magill says being mayor is gratifying and enjoyable, especially because holding office in a small town means much less of the haughty formality that is typical of big-city politics and a more relaxed approach to dealing with people.
While not tending to his official duties as mayor, Magill continues to work at McLanahan's, where he has been employed for nearly 34 years.
