Fred A. Markley, 80, Camp Hill, Pa., passed away Monday at Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill.

He was born in Bellwood, Pa., son of the late Wiliam H. and Edith (Briggs) Markley. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth (Lightner) Markley; and brother to the late J. Thomas Markley.

He is survived by his two sisters: June Miller of Roseville, Mich., and Mary Fawley of Bellwood, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Nancy Markley of Plymouth, Mass.; a brother-in-law, Earl Lightner of Camp Hill, Pa.; and his many nieces and nephews.

A 1946 graduate of Bellwood-Antis High School, he went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree from Shippensburg State College in 1957 and a master's of education in 1961 from Penn State University.

He was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Marines, serving from 1946-48 and also from 1952-54.

He retired in the early 1980s after 26-plus years as a science teacher, most recently for Red Land High School, Etters, Pa. Prior to his teaching career, he held positions as a clerk, bricklayer, funeral director and inspector for the Department of Agriculture.

During his life, he was active in many civic organizations. He was a 50-year member of the Masons. He was prominent in the Marine Corps League, of which he was a commandant. He also served on the board of directors for the Susquehanna Valley Federal Credit Union. In his later years, he enjoyed traveling, dancing and hunting, as well as the fellowship of his many friends and family.

A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, 2008, at Myers-Harner Funeral Home, 1903 Market St., Camp Hill, with Orrin Nearhoof officiating. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family at Logan Valley Cemetery, Bellwood, Pa. A viewing will be held from 2 until 4 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, and a service presented by the Masons will be held at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shippensburg University Foundation Scholarship Fund, 1871 Old Main Drive, Shippensburg, PA 17257.
