Tragedy Strikes Here as Accident Kills Four Men
Four Others Injured, One Seriously; All Employed at Hessel Implement Co.

WRECK CAUSE UNKNOWN
Funeral Services for Victims Held Wednesday and Thursday

Tragedy in the form of an automobile accident struck Gresham Sunday evening when four employees of Hessel Implement company were killed when the light truck in which they were riding overturned on the highway near Maupin. Of the remaining quartet of passengers, one is critically injured, while the other three suffered only light injuries and shock.
Killed were Frank Welty, Ray Metzger, Art Kreofsky and John Wettencamp, all of whom were riding in the back of the truck. Jim Chisum, now in the Veteran's hospital, was the only one of the five men in the back to escape. Also injured were George Moen, Ralph Deaville and Clarence Allesina, driver of the truck.
Accident Unexplained
Although many explanations as to how the accident occured have been circulating in Gresham and the daily press, the men who survived are at a loss to explain the reason for the fatal wreck.
Funeral services for Art Kreofsky were held Wednesday afternoon at Carroll's Funeral home, while rites for Ray Metzger were held in the Methodist church under the direction of the Jacobson company the same afternoon. Services for Frank Welty were held yesterday afternoon at Carroll's.

Funeral services for Walter Ray Metzger who lost his life in an automobile accident near Maupin Sunday were held in the Gresham Methodist church Wednesday afternoon, Dr. Silas E. Fairham officiating. Henry Jacobson sang "The Old Rugged Cross", and "In the Garden" favorite songs of the deceased. The service was under the auspices of the Gresham F.O.E., of which he was a member. Ritualistic service was read by Jack Greenwood, past president of the aerie. Pallbearers were Frank Gillette, Ed Nelson, Richard Metzger, George Pullen, Earl Jones and Harry Bjur. Interment was in the Lone Fir cemetery and arrangements were in charge of the Jacobson company.

Walter Ray Metzger was born May 2, 1893, in Gresham where he grew to manhood. On November 23, 1929, he married Mildred Mitchell of Junction City, Ore. Surviving him are his widow, two children, Jackie and Jean; his mother, Mrs. Gertrude Metzger; and three sisters, Mrs. Willa Grass and Mrs. Mabel Ferris of Portland and Miss Evelyn Metzger of Gresham. The deceased was employed as an automobile and sign painter at Hessel Implement company and Brockway and Nelson.
