William A. Saxon

William was a son of James and Mary Whitcomb Saxon; his siblings were Benjamin Saxon, Alexander Saxon, James Robert Saxon, Lucy Saxon Woods, Charles W. Saxon, Robert F. Saxon, Oliver F. Saxon, John B. Saxon, and Mary Saxon. William's half siblings were Anthony Minor Saxon, Amanda C. Saxon, Jane Saxon, and Mary Alice Saxon. William A. Saxon married Mary A. A. Hannah in Rush Co., IN on Nov. 21, 1855. They adopted their daughter Minnie who married Robert E. L. Harrington in Lake Co., IN on Nov. 28, 1906.

"William Saxon, who served with the 16th Indiana Infantry, and who lived in Fayette County, and his wife adopted a Civil War orphan from the Soldiers and Sailors Children's Home at Knightstown. The orphan was a girl, whom the Saxons clothed, educated, and reared to womanhood. The former orphan girl married one of the Harrington millionaires of New York, but her husband died before he could receive his share of the estate, and she was cut out of her husband's share, but an allowance was set aside for her. Apparently she didn't forget the kindness of William Saxon, who entered the Marion Soldiers Home in 1892 and died there in 1899. In later years his adopted daughter, Mrs. Harrington, saved money out of her allowance and had Mr. Saxon's remains removed to the cemetery near Fairview, in Rush County and placed beside his wife. She visited old friends and was persuaded to stay at the home of A. G. Saxon. When she left after the visit she wanted to pay for her lodging, but the Saxons refused. The former orphan girl, however, dumped a 'fist full of money' in Mrs. Saxon's lap and left, but first asked if Mr. Saxon would like to have the old Bible. She sent it to him, and it contained the records of the family of James Saxon, an uncle of Mr. Saxon, born in 1791." Eastern Indiana Farmer 3-27-1962 p. 3.
