Lieut. Thomas Bancroft married at Reading, Middlesex, Massachusetts. April 10, 1673, Sarah Poole. She was the daughter of Captain Jonathan and Judith (Jacobs) Poole.

Thomas "owned the covenant" November 13, 1670 and joined the First Parish Church September 1, 1677. He lived in the westerly part of Reading, Middlesex, Massachusetts. his house being the the 4th house built in the West Parish.

He was a military man and in 1675/6 he was an officer in King Philip's War. On 30 August 1689 he was appointed lieutenant of the soldiers in the lower Middlesex regiment. Rev. Cotton Mather in his "Magnalia Christi Americana (Vol. 2 page 605) states that on 5 July 1690 the Indians set upon Capt. Hilton's garrison in Exeter, and Lieut. Bancroft, then posted at Exeter, with the loss of a few of his men; relieved them. He led such a vicious charge upon the Indians that they fled without scalping the fallen. He was considered a "man of substance" and a leader in the community.

NOTE: The NEHGR Vol. 94 Page 219 lists the date of death of Thomas Bancroft, Jr. as 12 July 1718 in error, as Vital Records of Reading, Middlesex, Massachusetts: Page 494 lists the following:
BANCROFT, Thomas Dea., June 12, 1718. The date of June 12, 1718 is also recorded on the gravestone.Thomas Bancroft's parents were Thomas Bancroft and Elizabeth Metcalf, both from England. Thomas married Sarah Poole April 10, 1673 in Reading, Mass. Together they had 10 children: Elizabeth, Judith, Samuel, Sarah, Thomas, Rahum, Jonathan, Samuel, Jonathan, & Mehitable. I guess they liked the names Samuel & Jonathan since they had 2 of each name.
