MALDEN MAN LOSES LIFE IN ACCIDENT
Word of the accidental death of Benny Clark, 20, of Malden, came Wednesday night to his brothers in this city. The young man was an employee of Pure Oil Co. and his death was by drowning, an accident which occurred on Christmas Eve. Clark was a son of Omer Clark of Commerce.
Relating the accident today Mrs. Horace Clark said her brother-in-law was one of the crew of the McElroy, a tow barge of Pure Oil, and that at the time of the fatality the barge was travelling an inner coastal canal and was about 300 feet from the mouth of Vermillion River, near Abbeville, La. From information relayed the brothers here, Clark had gone to the front end of the barge and was putting out the running lights and presumably backed off into the canal.
This they were advised, occurred about dusk, and dragging, which was started immediately, has been going on since.
First information of the death was learned by the Horace Clarks as they were listening about 6 o'clock for boat calls Christmas Eve in their home at 26 South Hanover street, Mr. Clark himself being a pilot on the Nicholas Duncan, a boat of the Marquette Cement Co. After hearing a call from the boat the sheriff of Abbeville, and a later telephone call to the older brother from the pilot of the McElroy, Horace and his brothers, Ray Clark, 417 South Pacific street, and Harold Clark of Route 2, and their brother-in-law, W.C. Feisler of Malden went to Louisiana.
Benny Clark was born Nov. 8, 1932 in Commerce, was schooled in the grades at Illmo and was graduated in 1950 from high school in Malden.
His mother died in 1935 and since that time he had lived with his sister, Mrs. Feisler and Mr. Feisler. After his graduation from high school he was employed by the Marquette Cement Co.
