Obit: The Coldwater Daily Reporter February 10, 1920
Malvern Blackman, aged 22, died from pneumonia this morning at 5 o'clock at the home of his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. F. R. Drury, 136 East Washington street. He was the son of W. E. and Jeannette Sowle Blackman, and was born in Fremont Indiana, August 19, 1897. When he was six years old, his mother died, and he came to Coldwater to live with Mr. and Mrs. Drury, who brought him up, and have always looked upon him as their own son. He graduated from Coldwater high school with the class of 1915, and that same fall entered the Michigan Agricultural college to take a veterinary course. He spent three years at East Lansing and finished his course at the Columbus University,Ohio. He was a very fine student and an ambitious young man of ususual promise and ability. He had always attended Sunday school at the Presbyterian church and was one of the first members of the Boy Scout organization in Coldwater. Mr. Blackman received his degree from the university 1st July and also his license from the state board of Ohio. He is survived by his father, who lives in Fremont,Ind., and by four brothers and two sisters. His death was caused by pneumonia, which ,it is stated, developed from an attack of influenza, the first case of the sort,so far as is known, that has occurred in Coldwater during the influenza epidemic this winter. Private funeral services will be held from the home at 10:30 Thursday morning and the remains will be taken to Kinderhook cemetery, where he will be buried beside his mother.
