William Thomas Vanhorn was born in Belmont county, Ohio, Dec. 25, 1853, and passed away at his home in Soldier, Kansas, Sept. 27, 1919, aged 66 years, 9 months and 2 days. His illness was of a brief duration. On January 1, 1873, he married to Ella Almira Jane Waddell. To this union were born seven children- four sons and three daughters, all of whom survive him except Winfield, who died in infancy. The children are Ira, of Kansas City, Kan.; Bliss, of Bozeman, Mont.; Earl of Topeka, Kansas; Mrs. Olive Tolin of Linsburg, Kansas; Mrs. Vernice Franz of Soldier, Ks. and Miss Eva of Soldier, Kansas. Since the death of his wife and mother, ten years ago Eva has been the faithful daughter of the home. The family has lived in Kansas many years, having come to the state in 1884 and settled on a farm in the Avoca neighborhood. Here they lived most of the active part of their life. Deceased was a splendid singer and taught others to sing, drilled then in choir and directed them in singing. He also leaves five brothers and five sister, ten grandchildren. Mrs. T. B. West was with him during his sickness and death. None of the other brothers and sisters were able to be present. One lives in Washington state and the others in Ohio and Virginia. Burial was in the Mt. Olive Cemetery.
