He was the son of William J. M. Phagans (1874-1938) and Nancy S (Pierce) Phagans (1836-1900).

A.J. PHAGANS, for 25 years a citizen of Jefferson County, died at the family home southeast of Ryan Sunday, March 20, after a long illness. Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church in Ryan Tuesday afternoon by Rev. W. S. DABNEY, pastor of the Methodist Church, assisted by Mrs. COY M. SPENCE, pastor of the Assembly of God Church at Waurika and Rev. BURTON, pastor of the Nazarene Church of Ryan. Interment was in the Ryan cemetery. Mr. Phagans was born in Georgia March 10, 1874 and had just passed his 64th birthday. He came to Texas in 1890 and about 1913 moved to Jefferson County, Oklahoma locating near Ryan. Mr. Phagans was a good citizen and a Christian gentleman and a kind and loving husband and father. In 1907 he was united in marriage with Miss MARY LOU NELTON. To this union twelve children were born. The widow, five sons and four daughters survive. They are: Mrs. WILLIAM H. SALT and WILTON PHAGANS of California, LOWELL PHAGANS of near Dallas, Mrs. BRUCE ATKINSON of Chickasha, Mrs. F. L. WILSON of Nocona, OTIS PHAGANS, Mrs. OSCAR NESMITH, Mrs. A. M. SHELTON and Miss RUTH PHAGANS of Ryan.
