Would you believe this is South Dakota? Most of us have heard of the Homestead Act, under which settlers acquired land by living on it and "improving" it. Less known is the Timber Culture Act, under which settlers acquired prairie land by planting and nurturing trees. This created 10 acre patches of trees dotting the prairie. Malinda's gravestone is in the right foreground; that of her eldest son William Hendricks is the large stone far left. The two smaller stones closer to the camera are those of his children Harry, who died infant, and Katie, age 4. Here's what we think we see of the engraving of the stone. There's much more above that cannot be read from the photograph. According to her 3rd great grandson Tom Hendricks, who read the stone in 1985, it read "I will behold my face in gloriousness ... I shall be satisfied when I awake with thy likeness." Here's the closeup without the tracing so you can see for yourself. Malinda began her life's journey in the deep south, Alabama, as a Howard. Went to the far north, Wisconsin, as a Hendricks. Completed it on the prairie, South Dakota, as a Martin. Wow!
