Thomas was the son of Johanna Sullivan and William Gentleman and immigrated with them from Ireland. He married Catherine Mary ("Kate") Furlong in Springfield, IL on April 26, 1870, according to research by some of his descendants. According to the Collins Omaha City Directory, 1868, Thomas was a moulder and lived at a boarding house operated by his brother, William Gentleman, located on the corner of 12th & Chicago Streets in Omaha. In the Wolfe's Omaha Directory for 1876-77 and in subsequent city directories, Thomas is noted as a moulder for the Union Pacific Railroad, one of Omaha's largest employers. Thomas and Katie had seven children, three of whom died as infants. Those children who survived to adulthood included Clara Alice Gentleman Conlan, Emma Gentleman Larkin, John Aloysius Gentleman, and Philomena Gentleman Reed. Thomas died in 1922.
