VETS' 'FLOWER LADY' IS DEAD
Mrs. Mary L. Wiest, 78, Dies
After Four Days In Hospital
The little lady who has carried or sent huge baskets of flowers out to Veterans' Hospital, who sent flowers during every Season from her own flower garden to the patients who needed the brightness and cheer that flowers could give...
Mrs. Mary L. Wiest, 78 years old, Will not take any more brightness and cheer to the men who once were soldiers, as was her son. James H. Wiest, of Memphis.
She died at 11 p.m. yesterday at Methodist Hospital, where she was admitted four days ago. She had been ill several years.
Carried Flowers
Mrs. Wiest has carried many of the flowers to the ex-soldiers herself. Always interested in those who were ill, and particularly since her son had been in a veterans hospital for a while after the war, she would tend her flowers as if they were babies, pick them herself, and I carry them on the street car if necessary.
But since she had been ill several years, she had to send her flowers. She would go to the hospital with her son or daughter, but couldn't get out of the car as she had done in other years.
Native of Ohio
A native of Zanesville, Ohio, Mrs. Wiest lived there and at Ottumwa, Iowa, before she came to Memphis 20 years ago. She was an active member of St. Luke's Methodist Church and of the Eastern Star before her illness.
She is survived by her husband H. F. Wiest; four daughters, Mrs. M. G. Hodges, Henderson, Tenn.; Mrs. W. D. Dismukes, Pinson, Tenn., Mrs. J. F. Jones, Jackson, Tenn., and Mary V. Wiest, Memphis; two sons, C. A. Wiest, Eagle Grove, Iowa, and James H. Wiest, Memphis.
