IDAHO STATE JOURNAL March 1, 1972: F.W. 'Bill' Bergeson We join the rest of the state in offering sympathy to the family of F.W. "Bill" Bergeson. The candidate for the Republican nomination to the U.S. Senate campaign this fall was killed Monday in an automobile accident near Boise. It was ironic that this newspaper on the very day of his death had editorialized on the subject of the need for Bergeson to stay in the Senate primary race with the four other candidates. Rumor was that he might drop out and go for the GOP nomination for the House, opposing Rep. Orval Hansen in the Second District. Bergeson, although well known by certain individuals and in certain circles in Southwestern Idaho, was not afamiliar name to a great many people in this area. However, he was rectifying that early in the primary race, and as amanwellvers- ed and successful in the field of public relations--as well as other fields--the chances are that his would have been a household name by August 14th. In Eastern Idaho he was well known, indeed. Bergeson was an outstanding athlete in high school and college, a Navy pilot, an active churchman, a devoted family man and a format state senator. Bill Bergeson was the kind of man society cannot afford to lose, Idaho was greater for his having lived, and diminished now that he is gone.
