Robert Braden was a prominent farmer in the Clifty area of Decatur Co., IN, who married Mary Elizabeth Hart, Apr. 17, 1851 in Bartholomew Co., IN. At the outset of the War of the Rebellion, he enlisted Sept. 1, 1861, and was commissioned 1st Lieutenant of Co. "D," 7th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry, on Sept. 13th of that year.

During the summer of 1862, Mr. Braden accompanied a special regiment of volunteers from Decatur Co., IN that was sent to quell the guerrilla raids of Colonel John Hunt Morgan into southeastern IN. During the pursuit of Morgan and his men into KY, Robert Braden lost his life in a confrontation with the "Raiders" near Henderson, KY. His body was returned to Decatur Co. by two of his brothers.

Following a Masonic funeral service conducted by his "brothers" of the Milford Lodge, F. & A.M., Mr. Braden was laid to rest a few miles from his farm. His widow and four children, viz: Franklin Hart, Louisa Emma, Anna Elizabeth and Edith Roberta, survived.
